alaska state fair

For the last several days now Charlotte has been saying, "We'll go to church on Sunday and then we'll wake up Monday and go to the Alaska State Fair!" She's been counting down as best she can. She's been telling people that she'll eat ice cream and ride a horse. When we talk about the fair, it sounds like she has the county fair from "Charlotte's Web" in mind. Our Charlotte has been looking forward to this day for most of the past week. And Monday finally came! She did not eat ice cream and she did not ride a horse, but she did eat a giant M&M cookie and she did pet farm animals. I always like to go into the barn for a short time, but the smell usually chases me out within a few minutes. I stay long enough to say things like, "Man, that's a big cow" or "Gosh, those are cute baby pigs." But we had to stay long enough with Charlotte this time that we started wondering how to get our little girl into 4-H. Charlotte lingered over every cage and studied every animal. She loved it in that barn.

These pictures feature the foods we go to the fair for. The first is the roasted corn on the cobs we always get. That was right after getting to the fair. And then we have pictures with our giant cookies. A funny thing happened while eating our cookies. We sat on a bench watching people and Ash noticed a guy replacing a geocache! That guy obviously thought no one was paying him any attention, but we waited for the right moment and Ash grabbed the cache so we could log the find, too! I asked Ash what the guy looked like, and Ash said smiling, "Like a geek." We are into one of the geekiest hobbies in the world!

One other thing about our day at the fair... we went and walked through several travel trailers. I remember doing that as a kid with my parents and being so annoyed that was how we were spending our time at the fair! I wanted to be riding rides and having fun. How funny to be a parent now and admiring those trailers while Liam climbs all over the collapsable tables and Charlotte whines about wanting to ride rides. Seriously though, one of those would have been so handy a week ago!
